Primorsko is a paradise for nature lovers. The town is advantaged by its location, set among several protected areas that preserve valuable plant and animal species. The natural wonders of the region are countless, but let us mention the Ropotamo and Water Lilies reserves, the wetlands of Stomopolu and Arkutino, as well as the sand dunes of Perla.
In practice, the Primorsko area is an expansive reserve, with unique beaches stretching over 1,045,000 square meters, half of which are dotted with protected dunes. Among the dunes grows rare psammophilic vegetation, including the protected tertiary relic - the Sand Lily.
Around 1,120 species of plants thrive in the area. There are some subtropical plants here, such as Japanese loquat, olive, and fig.
The Ropotamo reserve extends broadly along the eponymous river. It includes "Snake Island," the "Arkutino" swamp, "Sea Wormwood," the riparian forests alongside the river, the dunes, the rock phenomenon "Lion's Head," and Maslen Nose. The reserve preserves rare endemic species. Here, you can see the characteristic riparian forests typical of this geographic latitude. You might encounter incredible rock formations, terraced shores, swamps, and marshes. Along the banks of the Ropotamo river, vines wind around trees, while in the shallow riverine lakes, bulrush and water lilies thrive. There is a limited population of sea wormwood here, a rare plant of medicinal importance. Over 100 plant species and 71 of the 250 bird species are listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria. At the river's mouth, the water has higher salinity than normal, which favors a rich diversity of fish.
The region includes typical lagoons - Ropotamo, Arkutino, and Stomopolu.
A large part of the Arkutino swamp is covered with dense vegetation. Besides the reed, water fern, and water rose, this area hosts protected plants such as rootless Wolffia and the marsh snowdrop. This swamp is also home to the rare Gambusia fish. The wetlands and lakes have ornithological significance. The ancient migratory path of migratory birds, Via Pontica, passes through here.
Snake Island, also known as "Saint Thomas," is located 200 meters from the shore to the north of the Ropotamo river's mouth. The island covers an area of 12 decares. Cacti grow here, making the terrain difficult to traverse. They were brought here by Tsar Boris III.
In the waters near Primorsko, there are approximately 30 species of zooplankton, 200 species of mollusks, 650 species of worms, 640 species of crustaceans, 180 species of fish, 4 species of mammals, and 150 species from other groups. About one-third of the fauna has typical Mediterranean origins. Relicts from the Pliocene Pontic basin can be encountered.
Near Ropotamo, there are peculiar rocks, the most famous being the "Lion's Head." It is considered a natural phenomenon and represents a natural composition of rocks that shape a majestic profile of a lion's head. This natural wonder is approximately 65-70 million years old. It is located in the Kaleto area, rising 110 meters above sea level, overlooking the banks of the Ropotamo river. The Merry Rocks are an area scattered with large rounded syenite rocks formed from ancient volcanic activity. In the areas of Dudino and Topolova Kaba, you can see two centuries-old trees, each 370 years old.
